Mike Palmquist is Associate Provost for Instructional Innovation, Professor of English, and University Distinguished Teaching Scholar at Colorado State University, where he supports university-wide efforts to enhance learning and teaching across the disciplines. His scholarly interests include writing across the curriculum, the effects of computer and network technologies on writing instruction, and new approaches to scholarly publishing.

Mike has been involved with writing across the curriculum since 1990, when he began working with Kate Kiefer, Dawn Rodrigues, and Don Zimmerman to develop an “integrated” approach to WAC that deeply involved the campus writing center, relied on network-based resources to support students and faculty members (prior to the launch of the web), and employed consulting and faculty workshops to create a program that addressed local barriers to the successful adoption of WAC. In 2006, Mike became the founding director of Colorado State’s Institute for Learning and Teaching, where he provided funding for various WAC initiatives. He subsequently led Colorado State University’s online programs. His portfolio as Associate Provost for Instructional Innovation includes WAC, open educational resources, open-access publishing, learning analytics, and international partnerships. He has consulted widely on issues related to WAC program design, writing assessment, faculty professional development, and program funding.

Mike is founding editor and publisher of the WAC Clearinghouse ( He also serves as co-director of the Center for the Study of Academic Labor ( His articles have appeared in scholarly journals including College English, College Composition and Communication, ADE Bulletin, Computers and Composition, Written Communication, Writing Program Administration, Kairos, and Social Forces, as well as in edited collections. He is also the author of several books, including the textbooks In Conversation, Joining the Conversation: Writing in College and Beyond, The Bedford Researcher, and Designing Writing, all published by Bedford/St. Martin’s.

Palmquist is a member at large of the executive board of the Association for Writing Across the Curriculum, a trustee of the University Press of Colorado, and a member of the editorial boards of several journals. He served as chair of the National Council of Teachers of English College Section Steering Committee and as a member of the NCTE Executive Committee. He served as chair of the NCTE College Section Steering Committee Working Group on the Status and Working Conditions of Contingent Faculty as well as on several task forces and committees for CCCC.

In 2004, he was the recipient of the Charles Moran Award for Distinguished Contributions to the Field, awarded by Computers and Composition. In 2006, he was presented with the Outstanding Technology Innovator by the CCCC Committee on Computers in Composition and Communication.
