DESCRIPTION:AWAC’s Mentoring Committee is delighted to host the following virtual roundtable: \nEvent: WAC Exemplars Roundtable 2025: How Award-Winning Programs Make WAC Work \nPresenters:\nRachel Jasiczek\, CT State Community College Norwalk\, winner of the 2024 Exemplary Emerging WAC Program Award\nKirsti Cole\, North Carolina State University\, winner of the 2024 Exemplary Enduring WAC Program Award\nRoy Schwartzman\, North Carolina State University\, winner of the 2024 Exemplary Enduring WAC Program Award\nBeth Carroll\, Appalachian State University\, winner of the 2024 Exemplary Enduring WAC Program Award \nOverview:  \nMentoring Committee invites all AWAC members to a virtual roundtable featuring the winners of the 2024 WAC Exemplary Program Awards. The Exemplary WAC Program Awards series recognizes the extraordinary achievements of WAC directors and/or administrative teams to establish\, maintain\, and sustain programs that foster and facilitate exemplary engagement with writing across the curriculum at their institution\, as well as institutional commitments to support these achievements. We are honored to host our winners for a roundtable presentation and a Q&A. \nRachel Jasiczek of CT State Community College Norwalk: Starting small\, the CT State Community College Norwalk WAC Program has expanded steadily since its beginnings in 2021. This WAC program has grown to serve twelve community college campuses in the CT State system. Operating with the assistance of WAC advocates across these campuses has required an impressive degree of collaboration. Equally impressive are the program’s efforts to meet the needs of a diverse student body across the twelve campuses. Efforts to promote equitable grading and linguistic diversity stood out to the awards committee\, as well as a forward-thinking perspective on AI. \nKirsti Cole and Roy Schwartzman of North Carolina State University: For more than 28 years\, the Campus Writing and Speaking Program (CWSP) staff has not only provided on-the-ground support for promoting\, assigning\, and assessing student writing to faculty and instructors across 68 departments and 12 colleges\, but along the way\, has also played a pivotal role in articulating a high-level vision and direction for a culture of writing that permeates the university\, its administration\, and the many publics whom they serve. NC State is one of the longest-standing programs in communication and writing across the curriculum\, yet is also one our field’s most engaged and innovative programs\, instilling confidence in its sustainability and continuing effectiveness. The CWSP staff’s contributions to research in writing and communication have resonated broadly\, marking them as among the most influential in the field. \nBeth Carroll of Appalachian State University: The WAC program at Appalachian State University stands as an enduring WAC program that both engages students with its Vertical Writing Model that accompanies and “grows with” students all four years\, and also engages faculty as they work with writing-intensive curriculum anchored in Writing Studies. The Vertical Writing Model\, so integrated within the General Education Curriculum\, shows the eagerness of the administrators to reach students through all stages of their college experience. Her open access book explores transnational activism in the April 2015 Nepal Earthquake and 2017 Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. Dr. Baniya’s scholarship has appeared in Technical Communications Quarterly\, Technical Communications\, Enculturation\, and Journal of Business & Technical Communication among others. \nMichael Pemberton\, Professor of English at Georgia Southern University  \nA past president of the International Writing Centers Association (IWCA)\, Michael has published six books and more than 100 articles on writing center theory\, tutoring ethics\, and writing technologies. He was a founding Editor of the first national WAC journal\,  Across the Disciplines\, and the founding Series Editor of Across the Disciplines Books.  Currently\, he serves as the Director of the CWPA Consultant-Evaluator Service and the Associate Publisher for Journals at the WAC Clearinghouse.  He was named a Distinguished Fellow of the Association for Writing Across the Curriculum in 2021 and received the Muriel Harris Outstanding Service Award from the IWCA in 2022.  From 2017-2023\, he was a co-PI of the Text Recycling Research Project\, an NSF-funded research study of text recycling ethics\, practices\, and policies in STEM journals. \nElizabeth Wardle\, Roger & Joyce Howe Distinguished Professor of Written Communication \nElizabeth currently directs the Roger and Joyce Howe Center for Writing Excellence at Miami University\, and previously directed writing programs at University of Central Florida and University of Dayton. She is the founding series editor of Writing Research\, Pedagogy\, and Policy with Utah State University Press and Retrospectives editor for Composition Forum. Her books include Writing about Writing\, Naming What We Know: Threshold Concepts of Writing Studies\, and Writing Expertise: A Research-Based Approach to Writing and Learning Across Disciplines. Our research suggests that a productive pedagogical approach to incorporating technologies such as VR involves understanding its unique affordances rather than expecting the tools to replicate familiar writing practices. The PAIRR approach features (1) readings about AI to promote discussion\, (2) paired peer review and rubric-driven AI feedback\, and (3) student reflection on feedback and revision. Through funding from the California Educational Learning Lab\, the presenters have expanded the project to 8 colleges. In this session\, presenters will report on PAIRR’s affordances\, limitations\, and possible adaptations for different WAC contexts. SUMMARY:AWAC PODS (People Opening Discourse about WAC) Registration
DESCRIPTION:AWAC Pods are self-forming and self-supporting small groups of 4-6 WAC administrators who meet on a regular schedule to discuss program development\, problems\, successes\, project development\, assessment\, student recognition ceremonies\, and other such WAC initiatives.\n\nThe AWAC mentoring committee is now opening registration for AWAC PODS for the winter term. The registration survey will remain open until January 12th\, and reminder messages will be sent every week during that time frame.\n\nAfter that date\, a new message will go out to all participants listed in the database to sign up for a POD. Three links will be provided  in that email: 1) to access the Google Sheet that will enable you to find others with whom you would like to collaborate; 2) to post your group formation form after you join a POD and identify a liaison in your group; and 3) to submit a few sentence summary on the POD meetings form after each meeting of your group. These links are also available on the Mentoring Committee webpage at AWAC if you lose track of the initial group formation email over time.\n\nMembers are free to shape their PODs to meet their interests and needs. We are honored to host our winners for a roundtable presentation and a Q&A. \nMegan Callow and Rebecca Taylor of University of Washington Seattle: The 2025 Emerging Exemplary WAC Program\, Writing@UW\, is conducting thoughtful\, intentional\, and fruitful work at the University of Washington Seattle. In its first three years\, this program has already fostered both micro- and macro-level engagements across its university system. The formations of the cross-campus and cross-disciplinary Writing Board and the Faculty Fellowship program demonstrate the program’s robust collaborative efforts\, while the Writing Pathways website showcases the program’s commitment to equity and agency by allowing all students to explore their own writing journeys and direct their own placement in their writing education. This is a program that is addressing writing needs for faculty\, administration\, and students. \n\nChristopher Basgier of Auburn University: As a 2025 Exemplary Enduring WAC program\, Auburn University’s program has exemplified what it means for a WAC program to evolve and deepen over time. Founded in 2010 and now in its second phase of leadership\, the program is thoroughly embedded in the university’s academic fabric\, offering a model of writing as a unifying force in the undergraduate and graduate experience. University Writing not only supports student writing and faculty development across disciplines\, but also actively engages with contemporary issues affecting higher education—equity\, wellbeing\, GenAI\, and multimodal literacy. With this award\, we celebrate the program’s commitment to compassion\, communication\, and institutional change through writing. \n\nErika Scheurer of University of St. Thomas: As a 2025 Exemplary Enduring Program\, the University of St. Thomas’s WAC program has demonstrated thoughtful\, intentional leadership throughout its long history. In addition to scaffolding writing instruction throughout the curriculum in an innovative way that facilitates learning generally and disciplinarily\, the support for faculty in preparing them for the work of guiding students in writing intensive courses is noteworthy. Indeed\, with this program we see deep faculty engagement as evidenced by their participation in a five-day development program and the sheer number of courses designated as WAC-related. Additionally\, the Committee was impressed by the 10-year strategic and assessment plans in place that provide a clear pathway forward and regular feedback to the program. Such plans will allow the program to evolve over time to respond effectively to the needs of its stakeholders.

In many cases\, these conversations draw on technological\, legal\, or\nadministrative expertise while marginalizing or oversimplifying the knowledge long developed\nwithin writing studies and WAC/WID work. At the same time\, faculty within our field remain\ndeeply divided about AI itself: some view any institutional engagement as capitulation\, while\nothers argue that disengagement cedes authority to voices less attuned to literacy\, learning\,\nlabor\, and equity. \nThis two-day symposium brings together WPAs\, WAC/WID leaders\, and faculty involved in\ncampus AI efforts to examine how disciplinary knowledge about writing\, learning\, labor\, and\nequity is shaping—or being sidelined in—these conversations. Through structured\ncollaboration\, participants will work collaboratively to document and analyze how writing\nstudies knowledge circulates—or fails to circulate—within institutional AI conversations and\ndeveloped shared frameworks for future leadership work. Asking a shared set of questions\nduring this workshop will lay the groundwork for a collective publication focused on writing\nstudies leadership in the age of AI: \n\nHow is writing studies expertise actually shaping AI decision-making across different\ninstitutional contexts?\nHow has the AWAC Statement on AI and Writing Across the Curriculum been\ntaken up\, adapted\, resisted\, or ignored across different institutional contexts\, and to\nwhat effect?\nWhat does it mean to lead from disciplinary knowledge at a moment when public\nnarratives about AI and education often speak for us rather than with us?\nWho is leading projects integrating AI into writing instruction\, writing tutoring\, etc.\, and\nhow are such projects being received by faculty\, students and administrators?\nHow can we create spaces for collective movement on AI that acknowledge principled\nrefusal\, ethical hesitation\, and genuine uncertainty without allowing paralysis to set\ninstitutional agendas?\n\nApplication Process\nIn order to apply for a spot in this workshop\, please submit a current CV and an 800–1000-\nword statement that addresses the following questions: \n\nWhy did you choose to apply for this seminar?
