Cary Moskovitz (carymoskovitz.org) is Professor of the Practice and Director of Writing in the Disciplines in the Thompson Writing Program at Duke University. Cary received his Ph.D. in aerospace engineering from North Carolina State University and the Master of Architecture degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Cary leads the Text Recycling Research Project, an NSF-funded, multi-institution research project studying text recycling (AKA “self-plagiarism”). He is the creator and director of two innovative pedagogical initiatives at Duke: the Duke Reader Project (also NSF-funded), though which alumni and other members of the university community draw on their professional expertise to provide students with feedback on their writing projects, and the Certificate in Teaching Writing in the Disciplines, which serves graduate student instructors and teaching assistants across the institution. Cary’s scholarship on writing pedagogy and text recycling has appeared in such outlets as The Chronicle of Higher Education, Science, College Composition Communication, Bioscience, the Journal of College Science Teaching, and Advances in Engineering Education. He is coauthor (with Lynn Smith-Lovin) of Writing in Sociology: A Brief Guide with Oxford University Press. He has served as a reviewer for the National Science Foundation and for a number of journals including Advances in Engineering Education, CBE-Life Sciences Education, and Advances in Physiology Education, and currently serves on the editorial boards for the journals Prompt and Across the Disciplines. Cary has served as a consultant, speaker, and workshop leader for many colleges, universities, and editorial/publishing organizations. His specialties are (1) writing pedagogy and related curricular matters in STEM and health science fields and (2) writing-related issues in RCR (Responsible Conduct of Research).
